Caring for your jewellery
Four habits that will keep these pieces looking new for years.
The one rule
Last on, first off.
Jewellery goes on after perfume, moisturiser and hairspray have dried, and comes off before you wash, swim or sleep. If you remember nothing else, remember this. It prevents almost every problem.
Keep it away from
- Chlorine and salt water. Pools and the sea strip plating fast
- Perfume and hairspray. Alcohol dissolves the protective seal
- Hand sanitiser. The same problem, several times a day
- Sweat left to dry on the metal. Wipe after a workout or a long function
Cleaning
A dry, soft cloth after wearing is all that is needed. If something sticky gets on it, use a barely damp cloth, then dry it immediately and completely.
Never use toothpaste, baking soda, silver polish or an ultrasonic cleaner. Every one of those is abrasive enough to take the plating off. They are meant for solid metal, not plated pieces.
Storing
Keep each piece in the pouch it arrived in, somewhere dry and out of sunlight. Loose in a handbag or jumbled in a box, pieces scratch each other. In humid weather, a silica sachet in the box helps more than you would expect.
Chains and hooks
Undo the clasp rather than pulling a necklace over your head. Most broken chains break that way. For heavy jhumkas, support the weight as you put them in so the hook is not bent.
If it tarnishes anyway
Then we got it wrong, and the 365-Day Shine Promise covers it. Send a photo and we will replace the piece.
